PRESIDENT MUSEVENI SUED FOR BLOCKING UNIVERSITY STUDENT ON TWITTER

Kampala – Hillary Innocent Seguya Taylor, a Ugandan citizen and Harvard University student has moved to court suing President Yoweri Museveni for blocking him on Twitter.

The International Relations masters’ student through his lawyer took legal action against Museveni together with government spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo and the police’s Chief Political Commissar, Mr Asan Kasingye who are believed to have played a role in his blocking.

Through his lawyer, Hillary, who currently resides in the US filed a lawsuit before the High Court in Kampala on August 277, 2019.

“That before being blocked, I used the same Twitter social media platform handles to communicate my views, dismays and suggestions to the respective officers,” he said in the suit.

Hillary explained that as a Ugandan citizen living in Diaspora, he depends on social media to keep in touch with the occurrences of his country and that being blocked on July 20, 30 and August 8, was hindering that.

“The effect of blocking me from the respective Twitter accounts is that I am now not capable of following and viewing the Tweets on their respective Twitter social media platform handles and hence not capable of contacting, replying, liking, tagging, retweeting and knowing the public information thereon or commenting on the same,” he continued.

Hillary went on to state that he was never given prior notice before his account was blocked and now seeks an order for the three accused to unblock him and cater for general damages caused.

Bringing to court 27 tweets by the president communicating the work done by the government to prove the accounts were meant to keep the citizens updated, Hillary argued that the three officials’ decision to block him is illegal, improper and irrational.
