THREE DIE IN LUANGWA BUS CRASH

THREE people have died while six others sustained serious injuries after the the vehicle they were travelling in, a Toyota Hiace minibus, registration number ABJ 7550, overturned along Great East Road. 

Zambia Police acting spokesperson, Danny Mwale, said the incident happened on August 24 around 22:30 hours, 20 Km west of the Luangwa Bridge, when the driver hit a pothole which led to a front right tyre burst, causing the motor vehicle to overturn.

In an interview with the Sun, Mr Mwale said the bus was been driven by Saviour Hatowa, aged 32, of Kabanana Township in Lusaka, who was coming from Lusaka going to Nyimba, and was carrying 18 passengers on board.

He said Mr Hatowa died on the way to the Clinic, while Fyness Nachilongo, aged 70, of Kapotwe Compound, in Kitwe, died at Nyimba District Hospital after sustaining fatal head injuries.

Mr Mwale said Justina Dowati, aged 46, of Nyimba District, died at St Joseph Clinic from suspected internal Injuries, and that the three bodies have been deposited at the Nyimba District Hospital mortuary. 

“The motor vehicle was extensively damaged. Three people died and six others sustained serious injuries,” he said.

“Some of the people who sustained serious injuries were Priscilla Chilongo, aged 38, of Kabanana Township in Lusaka who sustained deep cut on the forehead, swollen lips and was bleeding from the nose,” Mr Mwale said.

Mr Mwale said the others were Estina Chilongo Mugala, aged 64, of Kabanana Township, who sustained a painful shoulder, a painful wrist, and a painful collarbone, and Shelita Lungu, aged 50, of Palabana area in Lusaka, who sustained a painful chest and swollen forehead.

He said Mary Chilongo, aged 58, of Mpima area in Kabwe, sustained a swollen right eye, swollen forehead, and fractured left leg and Fainess Namugala, aged 66, of Chilulu Garden area who sustained a painful left shoulder and chest pains. 

Mr Mwale explained that Mirriam Nayame, aged 30, of Mtendere Township, sustained painful hands and a cut on the chin while Iness Nyimbiri, aged 42, of Matero Township, sustained a painful neck and both hands and legs were paralysed.

Mr Mwale said Benjamin Habeenzu, aged 31, of Chelstone Township, in Lusaka, sustained chest pains and painful left ribs while Musenge Mpeluka, aged 39, of Kabanana Township, sustained a fractured left hand, stomachache, headache, and painful collarbone. They are admitted to Nyimba General Hospital.
