Here’s UEFA’s coefficient rankings after the 2018/19 season: No, Liverpool are not No 1

This year’s European competitions have been a great success story for English clubs as both the Champions League and Europa League winners came from England.

While the UCL saw an all-English final between Spurs and Liverpool, the UEL final was played out in Azerbaijan between Chelsea and Arsenal.

Liverpool and Chelsea came out winners in their respective tournaments and once UEFA’s coefficient rankings were released many had hoped that it will be Liverpool who would come out on top.

But to a lot of people’s surprise, it is actually Barcelona who have secured the top spot – despite getting knocked by Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final.

Barcelona are followed by Chelsea in the second spot while this year’s Champions League winners Liverpool are third on the list.

While fans might be confused as to how this could happen but the coefficient rankings take a lot of factors into consideration, for example, a club’s seeding and revenue distribution.

As per Give Me Sport: “The coefficient rankings, which determine a club’s seeding in draws and revenue distribution based on results, saw Europa League winners Chelsea clinch second place, level on points with Barca.

“They formed the top three whilst Ajax secured fourth spot ahead of Arsenal in fifth who accumulated the same points as Tottenham in sixth.

“The overall coefficient rankings are formed of match points and bonus points which are collected by clubs during European competitions over the past five years.”

Ajax had a wonderful season both in Europe as well as in the Champions League where they managed to reach the semi-finals. And this is why they have been able to secure the fourth spot on the coefficient table.

Arsenal come in fifth on the table followed by Spurs and Man City who are sixth and seventh respectively while Man United are 16th.
