THE Chilenje Local Court has ordered a Lusaka man to pay K10,000 to the parents of a girl he deflowered and made pregnant.
Samuel Zulu, 23, a pupil of Garden House area was sued by Jonathan Kabwe, 45, of John Laing compound for compensation.
Kabwe said the defendant damaged his 15 year old niece last year and got her pregnant.
Kabwe told magistrate Ackim Phiri sitting with senior local court magistrate Harriet Mbewe that after discovering that his niece was pregnant, he summoned Zulu who readily admitted being responsible for the pregnancy.
“I decided to bring him to court so that he can compensate me for damaging my niece. She was supposed to go to grade 10 this year but couldn’t because of the pregnancy. My niece is 8 months pregnant.
“I want him to pay me K25, 000 compensation for damage. He and his relatives were not cooperative when we called them to discuss the matter,” he said.
In defence Zulu admitted being in a relationship with the girl and that he only slept with her once but he used a condom.
“I doubt if it is my child because we used a condom. I suspect that she was seeing someone else. We had parted ways and she didn’t tell me when she discovered that she was pregnant.
“I am a grade 11 pupil and I can’t manage to pay the K25,000. Right now I am not in school because of financial difficulties,” Zulu said.
The girl said Zulu was the first man she slept with and was responsible for her pregnancy.
The court ordered Zulu to pay K10,000 damage compensation with the first installment of K1,000 effective July.
