Politician ordered to pay bricklayer

RABECCA BANDA writes

THE Chilenje Local Court has ordered a Lusaka man to pay K650 from the initial amount of K1,300 he was sued for.

Humphrey Kapapula, 45, a politician of Chalala, Lusaka, was sued by Sylvester Chanda, 47, a bricklayer of Chifwema area.

Chanda said he was contracted to build a house for Kapapula last year.

He said he received part of his pay but Kapapula later contracted him to do another job at his farm.

“He told me to build a piggery the same year at a price of K500, which I accepted and built for him at his farm. He did not pay me,” Chanda said.

“He is owing me a total of K1,300 because of the K600 balance for the plaster and a K200 balance from the first piggery I built,” he said.

“I want the court to help me get my money.”

The two were appearing before presiding local court magistrate Patrick Nyirenda.

Kapapula said he contracted someone to but his house at K11,000 last year.

He said that person got another contract somewhere and introduced the Chanda to finish the job.

“Chanda finished the house. I asked him to stay in the house for some time because he had nowhere to go, and I agreed,” Kapapula said.

He said he asked Chanda to fit window frames and he agreed at a price of K600.

Kapapula said he bought the necessary materials, but Chanda did not finish the job.

“I am ready to pay him the K600 when he finishes the job,” he said.

The court ordered Kapapula to pay K650.
