UTH Special School in food SOS

NOEL IYOMBWA writes

HUNGER is stalking lusaka’s UTH special school which has since appealed to the corporate world to help pupils with food.

Head teacher Elina Phiri said that most pupils came from poor families and often reported for classes without eating something save for the tea they took without bread.

Speaking when Special Olympics Zambia inconjuction with Unibisco donated 34 cases of biscuits to the  school, Ms Phiri said the feeding programme at the school for children with special needs was  a challenge that needed support from the corporate world and other well-wishers.

Ms Phiri further bemoaned the lack of transport at the institution adding that pupils came from different far places and badly needed transport which was affecting education tours.

“Our pupils need a lot of exercises but there are restricted here because we don’t have transport to take them to places where they can engage in sporting activities,

“ We also don’t have enough infrastructure to accommodate many pupils. My appeal to the corporate world is that please help us with what we are lacking for smooth running of the school,”she said.

She commended Special Olympics Zambia and Unibisco South Africa for the donation and appealed to other institutions to emulate the two institutions.

And Special Olympics Zambia national director Cheelo Mufwidakule said the gesture was from its partners Unibisco South Africa on behalf of its managing director Faisal Bhadat.

He said that Special Olympics Zambia had been partners with UTH special school since 2012 to ensure that children with special needs were aligned to sports activities to improve their skills in order for them to interact with others.

He said that the company would work with other schools with intellectual disabilities such as Highland and Chainama special school to help lessen their challenges.
