Makeni Villa Road house face demolition?

CEASAR MBEWE writes

A NUMBER of houses along the newly tarred Makeni Villa Road in Satwant area face demolition to pave way for the construction of drainages by Avic International, it has been learnt.

Avic site supervisor Zhao Xing said his company could only put up proper drainage systems if the residents who had built close to the road moved further back.

Mr Zhao told the Sun in an interview that would mean demolishing some structures.

He said some residents had shown resistance to the directive given by the council to leave enough space near main roads for such activities.

However some residents talked to said they were not going to let their houses brought down while foreign nationals were left alone.

One of the resident Mr. Robert Mudenda a lawyer said the contractors had to find a way on how they would put the drainages without breaking any property,

“In Emmasdale Indian nationals were told to stop personalizing road and move from certain areas or face demolitions by government but nothing has happened yet Zambians are mistreated in their own country,

“If it was the Chinese or our Indian friends their properties were going to be left alone but since it is Zambians they have to lose money, I wonder why, there is a way these drainages can be put properly without breaking anyone’s house , this is money we are talking about,” Mr. Mudenda said

Another resident, Maureen Mukankhaolwa a civil servant said it was better the drainages passed inside their yards and if properly done they won’t cause any problem.

“It’s better they just put some of these drainages inside our yards properly and they won’t be a problem but not breaking houses that are constructed at a cost. Look at how bad the economy is and who has money to start buying cement and other building materials,” Ms Mukankhaolwa asked

Lusaka City Council public relations manager George Sichimba could not be immediately reached for a comment.
