WOMAN DIVORCES HUSBAND OF 20 YEARS

MUTINTA MULAYE writes

A 41 year old woman of Garden House has divorced her husband of 20 years at the Boma Local Court after she got fed up with their marital disputes.

Evelyn Makani told Senior Local Court Magistrate Bertha Zulu that she got married to Steven Kasengo, 50, in 1999 and only stayed well in her marriage for three months.

She said later her husband started going back to his ex-lover he was dating shortly before they got married.

“When I wanted to leave him he attempted to commit suicide. He was in ICU for 3 weeks,

“Just a day after I had my first born, I discovered he has a child somewhere else. We talked about it and I forgave him,” Makani said.

She said again in 2010 after she differed with her husband, he wrote a suicide note and when she showed his family, nothing was really done.

“He started torturing and insulting me after he got a nice job. He started beating me and he would embarrass me in front of our children, breaking things and insulting me. One of our children has even learnt to insult because of him,” Makani said.

She later sued him for divorce because they had a huge fight where even the children were affected.

In defence Kasengo told the court that his wife used to do business and later became an absentee wife and mother when the business was doing well.

“My wife does not help me when I have a problem. She is arrogant and doesn’t listen to me. I even cry when going for work. She tells me I’ll die poor and doesn’t consider the role I play as a husband and a father,

“She is not concerned about me and even falls asleep when I try to share ideas with her. She treats me like a kid. She doesn’t call me even when I buy her talk time. She just calls her friends,” Mr Kasengo said.

He said he did not want to divorce his wife because they have been together for too long and that they just need proper counselling.

The court found that there were marital problems and violence arising from misunderstandings.

Divorce was granted without compensation because both contributed to the failure of the marriage.
