Runaway teen remanded in custody

RABECCA BANDA writes

THE Lusaka magistrates has remanded a juvenile offender in custody for running away from home.

This was in a matter before Magistrate Nsunge Chanda where the boy is accused of theft.

Magistrate Chanda asked the boy why he was not coming to court.

The boy said his mother and grandmother always send him to do house chores.

His mother said she was nursing her sick mother.

She said she gave the boy transport money to go to his father’s house so that the father can be taking him to court when required.

She said his father wasn’t picking her calls and when she returned from Chisamba she found that the boy was missing.

She said he ran away from his father’s house and went missing for a long time.

She refused to go home with him fearing that he will run away again and she will be held responsible.

Magistrate Chanda said because the boy does not want to stay at home, she will keep him in custody until his matter is done away with.
