Woman escapes jail, gets fine for assault

RABECCA BANDA writes

The Lusaka magistrates court has fined a woman K1,000 and K5,000 compensation for assaulting another woman.

Particulars of the office before magistrate Felix Kaoma were that Beauty Changala, 58, of Kanyama assaulted Cynthia Kanongovelecausing her actual bodily harm.

Magistrate Kaoma found Changala guilty of the offence charged.

In mitigation, Changala through her lawyer said she was remorseful for what she did.

She asked the court for leniency saying she is the eldest in her family and has seven children in her care.

Magistrate Kaoma said considering the injuries the complaint sustained, he would have given Changala a custodial sentence.

He said in an effort to decongest the prisons due to Covid 19, it is right to sentence her to pay a fine of K1,000 and compensate the complainant with K5,000 to replace her teeth.

Magistrate Kaoma said in default of the sentence, Changala will serve nine months simple Imprisonment.
