FARMERS throughout Zambia should immediately start planning for the next farming season to mitigate the negative effects of climate change, says Vice President Inonge Wina.
Ms Wina urged all district agricultural coordinators to engage farmers in in appropriate agriculture mechanisms and climate resilient crops to enhance food security.
This was in light of the seasonal forecast by the Meteorological Department that has forecast that rains were likely to begin early October and end in January.
She was speaking yesterday in Mongu on her a four-day working visit.
“It is not easy for government to continue providing relief food to the people and hence the need for farmers to begin preparing for the season,
“It is time to come up with sustainable and long lasting solutions to mitigate the effects of drought that come as a result of climate change,” she said.
Meanwhile, government through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has so far distributed an estimated 50,000 metric tons of relief food to affected households across Zambia since January this year.
And according to DMMU communications officer, Rachael Chama, Ms Wina was yesterday expected to launch the Arthur Wina Memorial Hospital in Nalolo and meet some vulnerable people in the district before proceeding to Kalabo for a public meeting.
