Chipata City Council (CCC) has appealed to local farmers to sell it part of their land to establish a new dumping site
Mayor Sinoya Mwale said Chipata was desperately looking for land to establish a dumping site.
Mr Mwale said the city had been making frantic efforts to find an alternative landfill to address the current awkward situation the city has found itself in.
“We are aware of this sad situation. The city has no space to dump its own refuse. We approached Chief Kapatamoyo, unfortunately the land that was offered a lies in Chipangali district. So we are still negotiating if we could share it as a dumping site,” he said.
He said the situation needed to be treated as an emergency matter.
“However, our other option is to acquire land from anyone that has enough space we can buy from,
“Should they be such a person let them come forward so that we discuss,” Mr. Sinoya said.
Chipata has in the recent past witnessed careless dumping of refuse by residents, the development that posed a health challenges.
