THERE is need to have more female bus drivers because there are more responsible both on and off the road, Capital buses proprietor Ishmael Kankara has said.

Mr Kankara said women were the backbone of the family and she was working, there was a guarantee of food at home.

In an exclusive interview, Mr Kankara who runs a fleet of mini buses under ā€˜Flushā€™ trademark said the transport sector did not need to have bus drivers with bad habits and attitude towards the public.

He said that drivers needed to be good ambassadors on behalf of the company and the community hence the need to be highly disciplined.

He observed that female drivers were also extremely responsible on the road and ensured that they abided by the law.

ā€œI am not saying my male drivers are bad, majority are perfect but there few bad drivers who have got bad habits of drinking beer,  taking drugs and engaging  in other vices,

ā€œBut I must say 99 per cent of female drivers donā€™t have bad habits when there is a female driver there is always respect because we classify them as our mothers sisters and daughters,ā€.

Mr Kankara said that his company has employed few female drivers and expressed hope that more women could come on board.

He explained that he had opened his company employees to bring in their relatives when there was an opening because he believed it was a family enmity.

ā€œI am very proud of my drivers. There are fantastic but there are few we need to root out also. My aim is to see that my drivers have a better life even if they no longer work for me,

ā€œSo I connect them to better transport companies which own trucks, if they ask me to find employment for them. I do so because we are a pure Zambian company and we want to enhance Zambian lives,ā€ he said.
