Former President Edgar Lungu has stated that what was considered wrong during his tenure under the Patriotic Front (PF) should still be seen as wrong under the current UPND administration.
Speaking on Kanele Radio on Saturday evening, Mr. Lungu also noted that it is up to Zambians to judge President Hakainde Hichilema’s performance during his three years in office.
He emphasized that there should be no justification for actions that were criticized under the PF to now be accepted under the current government.
Commenting on the President’s call for constitutional reforms due to gaps, Mr. Lungu questioned how the UPND could now seek amendments when they previously rejected Bill 10 while in opposition.
“UPND celebrated the rejection of Bill 10 because they said it was a bad law. Now, they want to amend the Constitution they once claimed was fine. What’s good for the goose must be good for the gander,” Mr. Lungu, a lawyer, said.
He criticized the UPND for seeking to implement things they once condemned, pointing out that people who now excuse similar actions by citing his past should remember that he faced consequences for them.
“What was wrong is still wrong. Just because PF did something bad doesn’t mean UPND should do the same. That’s why PF lost,” he said, referring to past incidents of violence, stressing that similar actions under UPND should not be tolerated.
When asked to evaluate President Hichilema’s performance, Mr. Lungu said it was up to Zambians to make that judgment, as they are the ones feeling the impact of rising prices and the cost of living.
“The Zambians know the cost of mealie meal, cooking oil, and transportation. That’s why there’s talk about my return, because people know where we’re coming from,” he added.
