The Lusaka City Council (LCC), in collaboration with the Lusaka Conference of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church, has buried 38 unclaimed bodies at Chingwere Cemetery.
LCC Health and Veterinary Services Committee Chairperson, Daniel Mwewa, informed ZNBC News that a seven-day public notice was issued before the burial, which led to eight bodies being identified and claimed out of the original 46.
Mwewa, who also serves as Lima Ward 30 Councillor, mentioned that the Committee is considering increasing this year’s budget allocation to facilitate timely burials and reduce congestion at the UTH mortuary. He emphasized the council’s commitment to maintaining public health standards and handling unclaimed bodies with respect.
Additionally, Lusaka Conference SDA Church Chief Financial Officer, Chile Kabunda, stated that the church will continue working with the Council to ensure dignified burials for unclaimed bodies.
