The ongoing power outages in the country have significantly impacted traders operating butcheries in Lusaka who rely on electricity to keep their fridges running.
Alternative energy sources, such as generators, are costly to maintain due to their high initial costs and fluctuating fuel prices that change monthly.
With some areas facing power cuts lasting over 24 hours, stocking up on items like fresh meat, beef, and fish has become increasingly difficult, particularly for those in the butchery trade.
Reports indicate that some butcheries are experiencing financial losses, while others are allegedly selling spoiled beef to avoid losing money, thereby endangering consumers’ health.
In response to these challenges, some residents in Lusaka’s Kamanga compound have turned to vegetarianism, as shared by one affected customer.
