A 28-year-old student nurse from Chingola attempted suicide yesterday after checking into a lodge in Kitwe. The student, who is now under emergency observation, was reported to be in good spirits when she left her roommates at a boarding house.
Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba said the incident, which occurred between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in room 133 at an unnamed lodge, was reported to Wusakile Police Station. The lodge’s manager, Michael Mumbi, 36, informed the police that the third-year Registered Nursing student at Kitwe School of Nursing attempted to end her life by ingesting poison, though the reasons remain unclear.
According to Mr. Mweemba, the victim had lunch with her roommates at 1:00 p.m. and left suddenly around 3:00 p.m. She then checked into the lodge, paying K700 for room 133 and ordering food. She later sent messages and made calls to relatives, telling them that it would be her last day alive and that no one should be blamed for her decision. She also informed them that her body could be found at the lodge.
Upon receiving the information, police rushed to the scene and found the room locked. After forcing entry, they discovered the victim unconscious, along with the smell of poison, an empty wine bottle, and a plate of fried chips. The police and the victim’s family quickly took her to Wusakile Mine Hospital, where she was resuscitated and treated. Medical staff have since confirmed that her condition is stable and no longer life-threatening.
