STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TUESDAY – 10th September 2024 – Lusaka
The rising number of suicides, particularly among young people, allegedly involving the use of pesticides such as Doom, is deeply concerning. It is imperative that this hazardous insecticide, which poses a danger to both insects and humans, be immediately removed from the market.
This action must be taken without delay or compromise.
The Government of Zambia, along with health authorities responsible for regulating the sale of medicines and chemicals, should ensure that products like Doom are only available in licensed pharmacies. Furthermore, no one should be allowed to purchase these products without a specific prescription or recommendation, as is currently the case.
As we search for long-term solutions to this issue, the Government, through parliament, should consider passing legislation that revokes the licenses of any pharmacist who sells such products without a prescription.
This is not a matter of malice; it is evident that the unrestricted sale of pesticides like Doom poses a significant threat to human life, as numerous suicide reports confirm. The frequency of these tragic events is alarming, and we cannot continue to ignore the severity of the situation.
It is clear that many Zambians, particularly the youth, are struggling with mental health challenges. Therefore, we are calling for serious investments in mental health services across the country.
While removing these products from the market may not completely solve the problem, it is a step toward reducing the number of suicide cases in Zambia.
We cannot afford to keep losing lives, especially those of young people.
As we take these actions, we must also prioritize addressing mental health issues with the seriousness they deserve.
Finally, we urge the public to remember that no matter the severity of one’s problems, suicide is NEVER the solution. Let’s break the silence and talk about what we’re going through. Mental health is real.
