Stakeholders have denounced Thomas Zulu, the former mayor of Kafue, and two other young people for being detained without being granted police bond for more than ten days.
The three were reportedly taken into custody following their demonstrations against high living expenses, load shedding, and youth unemployment.
The president of the Socialist Party, Fred M’membe, has demanded that Mr. Zulu, Jason Mwanza, 28, and Chanda Chikwanka, 22, be freed immediately.
“These two young people could be their own children, so why are they treating them so cruelly?” What actions did they take to warrant such a severe penalty? “This is not the proper way to treat fellow humans,” he declared.
In a Facebook post, Human Rights advocate Laura Miti also denounced the arrests.
According to a UN report, Zambia has regressed toward democratic ideals.
Certain sections of the report, such as those on the harassment and recurrent arrests of opposition leaders, accurately identified areas of concern.
Then, it contained untrue statements about common Zambians being afraid to criticize their countrymen.
Today, I heard someone say something that I completely agree with,” the woman remarked.
Emmanuel Mwamba, the Patriotic Front’s Chairperson for Information and Publicity, also denounced the three people’s ongoing detention.
He stated, “The three were taken into custody last week and have not been given a bond.”
