A court has heard that the woman who says John Nundwe, popularly known as the Bishop General, raped her, has written to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) demanding that criminal charges against the prophet are abandoned. The court also heard that the husband of the same woman requested that Mr. Nundwe paid him K800,000 following the alleged rape which is alleged to have taken place in the woman’s matrimonial home.
This was revealed during questioning of the woman’s husband, who will be named Charles, 33, to protect the identity of the GBV victim. The victim will be named Malita. In this case, the charges are that Mr. Nundwe, 52, allegedly raped Malita, 27, on November 22 last year at her home in Lusaka. In his testimony, Charles told the court that on the day of the incident, he left his house, but when he returned an hour later, he found Mr. Nundwe in the girl’s room, ordering him to his wife to stop wasting time and spread her legs.
He testified that at that time he found his wife lying on the bed while Nundwe was naked on top of her having sex with her before the accused fled the house naked. But during questioning, defense lawyer Yokonia Daka asked if there had been any reconciliation efforts in this.
In response, Charles said yes. When asked why he reconciled with his wife, Charles replied that he had to take his wife back after she explained what had happened.Charles, however, argued that his wife was wrong to have allegedly had sex with Mr. Nothing.”But you didn’t tell the court the real reason why you and your wife reconciled?” Mr. Daka asked Charles who answered “No”. “That reason is that you demanded K800,000 from my client who refused to pay and this caused a split?” said Mr. Daka. But Charles said no.The court also heard that after the alleged rape, Charles met with the accused in the presence of his lawyers for a reconciliation.”Do you admit that you did not tell this court that you actually met my client before or after the incident?” asked Mr. Daka from the witness who answered “yes”.”What does it mean that you are not as honest as you want to appear because you are hiding some things that you believe are not useful”, the lawyer asked Charles, who answered “no”.
Mr. Daka then submitted a letter dated December 8, 2023, confirming that he intended to withdraw the case.”So really, was a letter written to withdraw this matter?” asked Mr. Daka from the witness who answered “yes”.”You know that your wife also wrote to the DPA to give up this issue? asked Mr. Daka.”Yes, under the influenceā¦” replied Charles. But Mr. Daka asked Charles to answer only Yes or No and not add anything like “influenza”. Son of Mr. Nundwe, Francis, alias Ba Matero, was present in court after the trial.
Trial continues.
