Health authorities in Zambezi District, North-western Province, have made an urgent appeal to the government for the construction of a perimeter wall and a new mother’s shelter at the district hospital.
In a recent interview with Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS), Hospital Administrator William Sibajene highlighted the severe challenges the hospital faces due to the lack of a perimeter wall. The absence of this critical infrastructure has led to a range of security and operational issues.
According to Mr. Sibajene, the lack of a wall has resulted in frequent human-animal conflicts. Roaming animals often intrude upon the hospital grounds, seeking grazing areas and water, which poses significant risks to the safety of both patients and staff. This intrusion has also led to the encroachment of marketers onto the hospital land, where they have taken advantage of the lack of barriers to use the hospital’s facilities, including toilets.
Mr. Sibajene emphasized that such encroachments not only undermine the hospital’s security but also compromise the health and safety standards that the institution strives to maintain. The situation, he stated, is exacerbated by the dilapidated state of the current mother’s shelter, which he described as a “death trap” in dire need of urgent repair or replacement.
The hospital administration is calling on the government and other stakeholders to address these critical issues by constructing a perimeter wall to enhance security and to build a new, safer mother’s shelter to ensure the well-being of patients and their families.
