Church blames increase in child marriage on Alangizi

By NATION REPORTER

THE Bishops Council of Zambia (BCZ) has blamed the raise in child pregnancies in Easter province on Alangizi (traditional teacher who orient young girls into puberty).

Easter province in January 2024 alone record 2813 Child pregnancies.

BCZ general secretary, Bishop Able Kaela said alangizi when preparing for girl child for puberty go to extremes with their teaching as a result as soon as the girls undergoes the traditional teaching either they fall pregnant or pushed in an early marriage by their parents.

He said government and traditional leaders should take interest and regulate the alangizi before they destroy the future of the country by allowing all the young girls completely drop out of schools due to pregnancies as result of the extreme adult trainings.

“We can’t allow these people to destroy the young girls all in the name of initiating them in puberty, the Alangizi have taken away the sacredness of the practice and now everything on sex which is so unfortunate,” Bishop Kaela said. Bishop Kaela said even the parents of the children that were being initiated should take particular interest in what Alangizi were teaching their children because sexual content was now more than how to handle puberty which they were meant for.
