Minister of Justice Mulambo Haimbe has reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to working with South Africa in achieving social and economic development in the two countries.
Mr Haimbe said that as Zambia and South Africa work towards meeting the various challenges being experienced including economic instability, threats to peace and security, as well as effects of climate change, there is need for the two countries to work together and remain united as a region. The Minister was speaking during the commemoration of the 29th anniversary of freedom and democracy day of South Africa.
Mr Haimbe noted that the struggle to end apartheid and bring independence for South Africa is a period in time that stitched Zambia and South Africa, based on shared commitments to the values of equality and democracy. He pointed out that Zambia remains proud of South Africa for the remarkable achievements since independence, describing it as one of the most advanced economies in the region and continent.
Mr Haimbe said he was hopeful that the unity and spirit of co-operation that both countries have worked hard to cultivate during the liberation struggles continues to prevail.
“Although this milestone is a moment of celebration, it is equally important to look back on what was a monumental struggle and remind ourselves of the sacrifices made by many to attain democratic independence,” said Mr Haimbe.
The Minister said that till now, the two countries continue to share a unique bond based on shared values and principles.
He called for closer collaboration in working to achieve sustainable development and social economic growth.
