Drowned pupil’s body retrieved

The body of a 15-year- old- grade 10 pupil of Mpelembe Secondary School in Luanshya district who drowned in a stream when she went to swim with 20 other pupils has been retrieved.

The body was recovered on Friday around 06:00 hours after it was found floating while trapped in some weeds in the stream after a four-day long continuous search.

The incident happened on Monday afternoon when the pupil identified as Mary  Kana went to swim in Luanshya stream in the company of 20 other grade 10 pupils after school closed.

District Commissioner, Oncemore Ng’onomo confirmed the recovery of the body to ZANIS in Luanshya.

Mr Ng’onomo who described the incident as disheartening said the deceased will be put to rest at Milemu cemetery in Luanshya.

It is alleged that the deceased met her fate after she was overwhelmed by the water current and drowned.

A combined team of divers from the local police, fire brigade and Zambia Army’s Commando unit of Ndola have been searching for the body in the stream since Monday. – ZANIS
