POLICE in Kitwe have recovered 10 copper cathode plates that were allegedly stolen by a gang of criminals from a moving truck that was laden with 23 bundles of the cathodes valued at US$330, 063, 79 destined for Mozambique.
Copperbelt Police Commissioner Peacewell Mweemba said police in Kitwe on Sunday recorded a case of theft of goods in transit from Muziri Nyikadzino 32 a Zimbabwean truck driver
Mr Mweemba said between 16:30 and 17:00 hours along the Mindolo road, Nyikadzino 32 a Zimbabwean truck driver reported on behalf of the company, Cross Country Containers of Zimbabwe that criminals allegedly stolen Copper Cathode plates from his truck.
Mr Mweemba said, on the material day, Nyikadzino was driving along Mindolo road with a truck registration number AEZ 4984 with trailers AEG 3033 and AEG 3034 laden with 23 bundles of copper cathode from Kolwezi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) worth USD 330,063.79 that was destined for Mozambique en-route to China.
“Upon reaching the railway crossing near Nkana Secondary School, a group of criminals jumped on the truck and cut the straps on one bundle using unknown cutting instrument. Mr Mweemba said police later redirected the truck to the station for formal report of the matter and docket opened.
Upon physical check on the truck, it showed that the affected bundle remained with 34 plates and they the value of recovered plates was not ascertained yet,’’ he said.
