Phone tablets assembly plant coming to Zambia – Mutati

By ANDREW MUKOMA

ZAMBIA will this week, Friday, sign an agreement and unveil  an investor planning to set up a tablets assembly plant in the country, the first ever in Southern Africa.

Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati has told journalist in Livingstone that ASTRA learning and its partner will be unveiled at the Innovation Africa Summit to be held in Lusaka this week.

Mr Mutati said that the coming of such a huge investment is because of the conducive environment the new dawn government has created barely a year of being in power.

He disclosed that at the same summit, the country is expected to host 46 ministers of technology drawn from African countries.

“This Friday in Lusaka, we are unveiling ASTRA Learning from the United States as an investor planning to set up a tablet assembly plant in ZambiaBasically what we did is to first deal with the barriers and the nuisances that was holding back investment including the regulatory barriers, the fees, the taxes and the process,” he said.

“Therefore the platform is now conducive for investment and this is why ASTRA Learning and its partner are coming in Zambia,” Mr Mutati said.

He boasted that Zambia is now ripe for investment adding that that was the reason why such an investor will be making the tablets in Zambia.

Mr Mutati said that once the assembly or making of the tablets starts, it will reduce the delivery cost of tablets to learners in School.

He added that this will help many more citizens to access tablets because they will be manufactured locally.

The Minister said that this was a huge investment that provides an opportunity for job creation.

“This is important for us as a country, we are big boys and that is the reason why this summit will be held in Zambia…there is   no such a summit where 46 ministers of technology assemble in one place in Africa,” he said.
