Heavy rains leave a trail of destruction in Mpika
Mpika, January 12, 2022, ZANIS—Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds have blown off roofs on eight houses, a shop and damaged some properties in Chabansa and Katongo Kapala areas of Mpika District in Muchinga Province.

Mpika District Administrative Officer, Bwalya Kaniki has confirmed the incident to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Mpika today.

Mrs Kaniki says the unfortunate incident happened yesterday round 15:00 hours.

She says after the roofs were blown off by strong winds, some of the properties were heavily soaked while other properties were damaged.

Mrs Kaniki has since appealed to well- wishers to come on board and help in any way possible to rehabilitate the houses and offer any kind of assistance to the affected families.

Meanwhile, Mpika District Disaster Management and Mitigation Unity (DMMU) Committee Acting Secretary, Samson Chise , has expressed sadness after conducting an on-spot check on the affected families, saying the situation needs urgent attention.

Mr Chisi said an assessment report of the situation has been done and will be submitted to DMMU at the Province today.

“The strong winds were very unusual and ripped off the entire roof of a house to the extent of throwing it away to a distance of even more than 100 meters,” said Mr Chise.

Meanwhile, Bernard Chisanga, one of the affected residents has appealed to Government through the DMMU to quickly help the affected families saying their predicament is beyond what they families can bear.

Mr Chisanga who is also the owner of the Green House Agricultural Technology shed in Katongo Kapala said his Green House was partially damaged and some properties were destroyed while other properties were carried away by the strong winds.

“I thank God that despite all this destruction, no life was lost,” said Mr Chisanga.
