Cannabis cultivation earns man imprisonment

The Kasama Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a-45-year-old man to one year imprisonment, after pleading guilty of cultivating mari- juana.

In this matter John Bwalya of Mabula village in Mungwi district was charged with the said charge for cultivating marijuana in his cas- sava field.

Facts before the court were that on 2nd August 2021, the Drug Enforcement Commission or DEC officers while conducting a patrol in the area, discovered that Bwalya had cultivated marijuana weighing 7.8 grams.

In mitigation, Bwalya pleaded for maximum leniency saying he did not know that what he did was an offence and that he was remorse- ful even-though he had cultivated marijuana for personal consump- tion.

In response Magistrate Joe Samboko, said he had considered the convict’s mitigation, but he was quick to state that the court will be failing in its duties if it does not carry-out its duties of punishing offenders and sentenced him accordingly
