COPPERBELT province permanent secretary Bright Nundwe has urged farmers in the area to take agriculture as the economic driver. The top government official said President Lungu has placed agriculture as the main economic stay of the country hence ensuring that inputs were supplied and delivered early. He said this when Nyimba Investments officials led Head Sales and Marketing Manager Willings Mulendema paid a courtesy call on him.
“I want to make this message very clear and that is agriculture is the key sector in any economy. You can have minerals and the rest but all have to have food and agriculture is the way. President Lungu has given a firm and solid directive that let agriculture be the main economic stay. We ought not to take agriculture lightly,” said Mr Nundwe.
As a result of the timely delivery of inputs, he said most farmers have taken agriculture seriously. He was confident the province would be able to record a bumper harvest during the 2020/21 farming season.
“I must confess that people on the Copperbelt have learnt that farming is a serious business. Go to Kalulushi, Lufwanyama, Masaiti and see how the people have learnt to do farming. People in those mining towns have learnt that agriculture should be the main economic stay,” he said. And Provincial Agricultural Coordinator (PACO) Obvious Kabinda said the administration was ready to start distributing inputs as soon as the launch is done. Mr Kabinda praised Nyimba for bringing inputs early saying the move would result in the area recording a bumper harvest.
“Nyimba has been a good partner and you have shown that you are not just in here for businesses but looking at the welfare of the farming community. So far you have supplied 100 per cent for Mpongwe and soon the entire province will be covered,” he said. And Mr Mulendema said Nyimba would deliver for the entire Copperbelt province by May 30
