MONZE GRAVEYARD NOW DUMPSITE

RESIDENTS of Manungu Ward in Monze District, Southern Province, have turned a grave yard into a dumping site.

Area ward councillor, Chris Bwaangu, complained that residents were disposing of waste in the grave yard, thereby creating an environmental challenge.

He called on residents to desist from the illegal practice.

Mr Bwaangu said this during an interface meeting organized by the Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) under the GIZ sponsored Citizens Local Participation in Governance (LoPaGo) project.

He said it was inhuman for residents to disrespect the dead by turning their final resting place into a dumping site.

“A graveyard is a sacred place and therefore turning it into a dumping site is uncalled for. As citizens, let us ensure that this system of dumping garbage at the graveyard at night comes to an end,” Mr Bwaanga said.

He urged citizens to be responsible so as not to make the town dirty.

“I have noticed that in Manungu ward which is the biggest urban ward we citizens have lived very careless just dumping garbage anyhow, some are even dumping at Monze town school grounds,” he complained.

But a resident Samuel Hachandi blamed the council for failing to guide people on where to dump garbage.

“If the council could give us a proper timetable of the days they come to collect garbage, this issue can end. In the entire Manangu ward, we only have one garbage bay, so the council must increase places of dumping garbage for collection,” Mr Hachandi said.

But Monze Town Council health educator, Malawi Handema, advised residents to be responsible and help the local authority manage waste.

“Some of this solid waste can be recycled and you can be generating income if only you knew.Let’s stop this habit of dumping garbage anyhow,” Mr Handema said.

And Southern Province CSPR coordinator, Edina Kumwenda, said effective development could only happen when citizens engaged their leaders on matters affecting them.

“As CSPR with sponsorship from GIZ we are implementing LoPaGo program to encourage you citizens to engage your leaders and people in offices so that you discuss issues affecting you like the case of solid waste management,” Ms Kumwenda said.
