Defilement of a baby in Kanyama distresses NGOCC

THE defilement of a two-year-old girl of Kanyama compound by a 53-year-old man is a gross violation of the right to life, says the Non-governmental Gender Organisations Coordinating Council (NGOCC).

NGOCC executive director, Engwase Mwale, described the act as a barbaric and evil act that has been received with deep distress by the women’s movement.

M. Mwale said it was saddening that the evil acts have continued even after the sad death of the three-day old girl of Luwingu district.

“It is inconceivable how a 53-year-old man can even think of forcing oneself on a two-year-old girl. This trend seems to be continuing even after the sad death of three-day-old ‘Baby Queen’ of Luwingu district and many others whose lives have been cut short in similar circumstances,” she said.

Ms Mwale said the NGOCC was disturbed at the increased cases of defilement cases.

She said: “The increased defilement cases, especially involving children, are symptomatic of a deeply rooted moral and psychological catastrophe in our country.”

Ms Mwale however commended the alert members of the community in Kanyama who apprehended the suspect and handed him over to authorities.

Meanwhile, Ms Mwale condemned, in the strongest terms, the incident in Mpika’s Chitulika village where a woman is alleged to have killed her husband, Julius Mwila, after a marital dispute.
