‘I saw them burning tyres on rail line’

LUCY PHIRI writes

A NEIGHBOURHOOD watch officer has narrated in the Kafue Magistrate Court how he caught three men burning tyres on the Kafue rail line roundabout.

This is a matter before magistrate Kawama Mwamfuli in which three men have been  accused of causing riotous behavior by burning tyres on railway line main road.

Witness Kalenga Kalenga told magistrate Mwamfuli that on 18 February, while he was on duty, he reported for his shift   from 19:00 hours to 07:00 hours the following day. Upon reaching his workplace, they received a report at the police station that people had blocked the railway line at Shikoswe junction by burning tyres on the main road with petrol.

He said they went to patrol the area quickly because it was the road used by people coming and going to Lusaka.

“We were eight in number together with police men and upon reaching the scene we saw fire burning and some men were there stopping vehicles to pass.

“We disembarked from the vehicle and immediately they saw us they scampered in different directions, we chased them and apprehended three of them,” he said.

The three were said to have caused a riotous behavior which is lawful.

Matter adjourned for continuation of trial.
