THE Lusaka Magistrates Court has sentenced a man to 12 months imprisonment for trafficking in 350 grams of marijuana.
Particulars of the offence before magistrate Martha Miti were that Edgar Silile trafficked in marijuana at Chibolya Compound along Gaza Street.
Facts were that on February 24, the Drug Enforcement Commission received information that there was a male person suspected to be trafficking in marijuana in Chibolya.
The DEC officers proceeded to the compound and found Silile standing near a place where he was selling drugs.
The officers searched Silile and extended the search to the make-shift stand where they found a plastic bag containing 350 grams of marijuana.
Silile said he was sorry for dealing in drugs and pleaded for mercy saying he would not do it again.
He said his actions had brought shame upon his family and they would suffer if he was jailed because he provided for them.
Magistrate Miti said exercising leniency did not mean that one had to be set free.
She said Silile knew that what he was doing was wrong and that there were consequences for his actions.
The court sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour.
