Kafue under lockdown

NOEL IYOMBWA writes

KAFUE town is currently under a 24 hour lockdown to give room for mass screening following the recent COVID-19 death and two other active cases.

The two new cases have been traced to the dead victims of the disease.

President Edgar Lungu ordered a complete lockdown of Kafue district with effect from today.

Kafue becomes the latest town to be locked down since the country recorded its two cases last month.

The district has been declared a hotspot for the Covid-19 virus after three cases where recorded with one death.

Speaking at the Covid-19 latest update, Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya said the President had invoked the Public Health Act to avoid the escalation of new cases in the district.

Dr Chilufya also announced that Zambia had not recorded any positive COVID-19 case in the last 24 hours.

A massive screening and disinfection campaign has begun and will be done in the district starting today.

Dr Chilufya urged Kafue residents to cooperate with authorities as they conduct various interventions such as screening and disinfecting in the area to ensure that the new infections are contained.

He also advised them to stay home.

Dr Chilufya said the number of cases remained at 45, 30 recoveries, two deaths as well as 13 active cases while 250 people have been discharged from the mandatory 14 days quarantine.
