A LUSAKA man who admitted shaming his family for smoking marijuana has been jailed two months.
“I am a bad example to my community. What I did was wrong and I have learned a lesson. I ask the court, my family and the community to forgive me for what I did,” he said.
Appearing at the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Kate Sakwanda was Chanda Lubemba accused of trafficking in 180 grams of marijuana on 26 February 2020.
Particulars of the offence was that, the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) received information of a suspected person trafficking in psychotropic substances in Chibolya township.
The team of DEC officer went to Chibolya where they found the accused person standing outside a makeshift shop.
The officers introduced themselves to the man and conducted a body search on him.
The officers found 180 grams of marijuana and Lubemba admitted ownership.
Lubemba surrendered the drugs to the officers and was taken into custody.
He pleaded for leniency from the court saying he has embarrassed his family and community.
He asked the court for non-custodial sentence saying he has reformed and is willing to teach others that smoking marijuana is illegal.
Magistrate Sakwanda said the use of marijuana among youths in communities is on a rise and cannot let Lubemba free but punish him so that he can learn that trafficking in psychotropic substance is serious offence.
The court sentenced Lubemba to two months imprisonment.
