The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has started the delimitation exercise for Samfya District of Luapula Province.
Samfya council secretary Laura Munkanta said the exercise, which was being held at Samfya Beach Conference Hall, was expected to end on September 11.
According to a statement issued by Samfya Town Council public relations officer Gwendolyn Mchenga, Ms Munkanta said there was a need for people to fully participate in the exercise as it was a basis for registration of voters.
Ms Munkanta said the exercise also promoted effective citizens representation and made electoral services more accessible to the people.
She said the delimitation of constituencies, wards and polling districts was embarked on by ECZ from July to November.
Ms Munkanta said the exercise would involve the creation and renaming of constituencies, wards and polling districts thereby establishing new polling stations were necessary.
She explained that exercise had been necessitated by several factors which includes: an increase in population, the long distances that the voters cover to access electoral services, developmental and new settlement patterns among other factors.
In attendance were council chairperson Francis Musunga , council deputy chairperson James Kapila , Bangweulu Member of Parliament Anthony Kasandwe , District Commissioner Nason Bwalya , government officers , Traditional leaders , Council Officers among other stakeholders .
