POLICE in Muchinga Province on Thursday impounded two unregistered motor vehicles at Nambuluma check point in Chinsali, bringing to the number of seized vehicles to 12.
Muchinga Province police commissioner Joel Njase said the incident occurred between Wednesday at 20:00hrs and Thursday at 05:00hrs in Mweya area of Chinsali district.
Mr Njase said the vehicles a Toyota Harrier and Toyota Vitz were being driven by Soko Katazo aged 46 of Kabwe and Maxson Munabanze aged 38 of Lusaka.
“The two vehicles are believed to have been smuggled and drivers have been detained in police custody for smuggling offence.” Mr Njase said.
Mr Njase said the impounding two vehicles brought the total of impounded vehicles to 12 since March and all were parked at Police Division headquarters for further investigations.
Mr Njase warned that the provincial police command would deal with anyone involve who failed to clear the vehicles with Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) in accordance with the law.
He said government was losing a lot of revenue in unpaid taxes when vehicles were smuggled into Zambia.
“We shall ensure that we work with ZRA and other security wings to stop these activities, “he said.
Mr Njase has advised clearing agents to ensure they followed all necessary procedures to avoid coming into conflict with the law.
He has also urged ZRA and police officers against allowing that illegality as the law would not spare them.
