CHIRUNDU district is food insecure following the dry spell which characterized the 2018/19 farming season and has worsened hunger situation, says acting district commissioner O’Neil Chiya.

Mr Chiya said because of food scarcity, government has been sending relief maize and mealie meal to the district.

He said in the last farming season the district experienced total crop failure including to many parts of Zambia which were now in need of relief food.

Meanwhile Chief Chipepo has challenged both the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) and Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) coordinators to resign if they did not want to deliver according to the expectations of the general public.

He regretted that people in his chiefdom were surviving on wild fruits due to the worsening situation and needed urgent government interventions.

And Chirundu central ward councilor Chrispin Malesu has challenged government through the FRA and DMMU to send more relief food to the district on their expenses.

He said the idea of exploiting council resources to ferry the commodity from Lusaka will not work because the local authority did not have enough resources.

Meanwhile council secretary Mr John Mwanza has reported that the Road Development Agency (RDA) has considered the Ibbwemunyama -Malengo Road for massive rehabilitation at a cost of about K3million.

Mr Mwanza said the 31kimometre stretch which was in a dilapidated state would among other things be considered for clearing, road formation, graveling, compacting and culvert installation.

This came to light yesterday during the full council meeting held at Mtuzi Nadi Lodge.

And Mr Mwanza announced that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) would from September 19 to 22 hold district delimitation sittings.

He explained that the delimitation exercise was fundamental so that elections were conducted efficiently and effectively.
