4 DROWN ON LUAPULA RIVER

FOUR people among them two juveniles have drowned on Luapula River after the canoe in which they were travelling capsized due to overloading.

Police spokesperson Esther Katongo who confirmed the incident said it happened on September 2 around 16:00 hours.

Ms Katongo identified the dead as Patricia Mandela, 23, female juvenile Mwansa Safeli aged four, male juvenile Mwape Safeli aged three and a female adult identified as Maria Peter aged 25 all of Ndeni Village, Chief Sokontwe of Milenge District

She said the incident happened when the victims were crossing the river from Milenge to a fishing camp in DR Congo.

“It is suspected that the canoe capsized due to overloading. All the bodies have been retrieved,” Ms Katongo said.

In another development, Ms Katongo said a male juvenile aged two years has died after being knocked down by a motor bike on September 2, around 17: 00 hours at Msuzi area near Msuzi Secondary School on Lundazi – Chipata Road.

She said the victim was identified as Ganizani Nyirenda of Msuzi area, Chief Mphamba.

“The accident happened when the rider of the motor bike lost control due to inexperience and went to hit the pedestrian who was on the side of the road,” she said.

Ms Katongo said the body was deposited in the Lundazi District Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
