RENOWNED Malawian prophet Shepherd Bushiri has donated 500 bags of mealie meal in Chirundu district through his Zambian branch and the District Commissioner’s office.
Chirundu district commissioner Alfred Hamunjo confirmed the development in a telephone interview.
He said as a result of the hunger situation in the district, his office has engaged different churches to supplement what government is doing and that the Enlightened Christian Gathering Church whose leader is Bushiri is one of the churches that donated 500 bags of mealie meal to the district.
Mr. Hamunjo described the hunger in the district as bad but was quick to mention that the government was doing everything possible to control the situation.
The Charismatic prophet Shepherd Bushiri, the leader of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) church, was recently arrested for alleged money laundering after members of the church leadership claimed he was sending an estimated R15-million a month to Malawi, his country of birth.
The money was allegedly transported out of South Africa in Bushiri’s private jet and other vehicles.
Bushiri also appeared before the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (the CRL Rights Commission) to explain the circumstances surrounding the deaths of three women who were killed during a stampede at his church in December 2018.
In 2017 the Zambian government through the Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs Godfridah Sumaili denied him entry into the country.
The minister announced that Government would not allow the so-called -men of God with dubious practices or unknown intentions to come and ply their “prophetic” trade in Zambia.
She said that government was concerned that the evangelical, prophetic and Pentecostal movements had been infiltrated by magicians, charlatans, and false prophets.
