Lecturer charged with soliciting for sex in exchange for grades

Dar es Salaam – A lecturer has been arraigned in court for soliciting for sex from students in exchange for good grades.

Samson Mahimbo, a lecturer at the National Institute of Transport was arraigned at the Kisutu magistrate’s court in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Wednesday.

While reading out the charges, a lawyer representing Tanzania’s anti-corruption agency, Taasisi ya Kuzuia na Kupambana na Rushwa(Takukuru) said that the lecturer committed the offence on August 14, 2019.

The prosecution alleges that Mahimbo committed the crime in a hotel room within the Mwenge area, Dar es Salaam.

The lawyer further claimed that the accused misused his authority, soliciting for sex from the student while promising to help her pass exams.

Mahimbo pleaded not guilty to the charges. The next hearing is set for September 17 2019.

Lecturer jailed

Seven months ago, a Nigerian lecturer was sentenced to two years in prison for demanding sex from a female student.

Richard Akindele pleaded guilty to four charges including sexual coercion of a student and demanding gratification from a student.

The female student, Monica Osagie had gathered evidence against the lecturer by recording a phone conversation they had.

Akindele was fired by Obafemi Awolowo University for sexual misconduct one month after the story blew and the Nigerian Senate launched an investigation into the issue of sexual harassment in universities.
