Lions donate text books to Solwezi schools

GLORIA KANGWA writes

THE Lion’s Club of Kitwe Mukuba has donated over 10,000 textbooks to 12 learning institutions in Solwezi worth K2 million.

The 10, 142 textbooks were given to six primary schools, four secondary schools, one higher learning institution and the Provincial Education Office library.

Speaking during the donation at Solwezi Urban Secondary school, president of the club Lion Beswell Mpempulwa said the donation was made to prop up educational materials and contribute to the establishment of libraries.

Lion Mpempulwa said good reading culture was important at an early stage of a learner, adding that as much as the text books were not prescribed for the curriculum, they would be relevant to the subjects as supplementary books to improve vocabulary.

He said Mushitala primary school received 12 boxes containing 510 text books, Kikombe primary school got 15 boxes containing 1,025 text books, Kimale primary school 11 boxes containing 411 text books..

“Since the books are procured at a great cost, the teaching fraternity should use rare skills to convert the currency value into knowledge value. As you take these books kindly please ensure that they are accessible and used to the fullest by learners,

“Worn out books as a result of heavy usage can be replaced with joy as long as copies are available in circulation. We would like to work with the District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) in supplementing Government’s efforts in eradicating illiteracy levels in our country”, he said

DEBS Febby Kilele thanked the Lion’s club for the great gesture adding that the books would go a long way in alleviating the book drought that was being experienced.
