Maid divorces foul-mouthed hubby, pockets K6,000

LUCY PHIRI writes

A MAID of Overspill in Lusaka’s Kamanga Township has divorced her husband of 10 years because of his vulgar language and for being promiscuous.

Precious Mpofu, 28, sued her husband, Donald Chanda, 47, a carpenter of Obama in the Chelstone Local Court for divorce.

The couple married in 2009 and has three children together.

Mpofu told presiding magistrate Mary Namangala she and her husband had been experiencing misunderstandings and had been on separation for almost four months.

“My husband insults me a lot whenever we have a misunderstanding. He usually comes where I stay and enters through the window,

“He got all my pictures and I don’t know where he takes them because of late he has been threatening me of taking them somewhere very far,

“I just want divorce because I am tired of this marriage. My husband is a liar and also has another woman.  I cannot be a second wife,” she said.

In defence Chanda denied the allegations saying he had been apologising to his wife but to no avail.

“I have apologised for more than 10 times, but nothing happed. My wife couldn’t accept my apology. I did not steal the children. Instead, I took them to my sister’s place. I don’t want them to suffer. I don’t want divorce because I don’t want my children to suffer,” he said.

But Mpofu said all she wanted was divorce because she was tired of the marriage and her husband’s behaviour and the

court granted her wish.

“We cannot force marriage. Divorce has been granted and defendant to compensate plaintiff with K6,000 with first instalments of K1,000 at month end of September and K350 thereafter.

It also ordered Chanda to bring back the children as soon as possible.
