CHONGWE Constituency may be split into three constituencies if the stakeholders’ proposals are adopted.
This was proposed during a delimitation stakeholders’ consultative meeting held from August 1 to 4.
The meeting was held in Chongwe Central Ward.
It was convened by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) in line with its mandate to conduct such an exercise in a period of not less than 10 years.
The meeting was attended by various stakeholders who included the parliamentary office, member of Parliament, the mayor, political party leaders, civic leaders, civil society organisations, traditional leaders and residents.
During the opening of the meeting, ECZ commissioner Emily Sikazwe said the delimitation exercise was critical in enhancing electoral services.
The meeting proposed to split the constituency into three, namely Chongwe, Manyika and Chainda.
More wards were also proposed.
The meeting was peaceful and the stakeholders deliberated in a spirit of oneness.
Some participants described the proceedings as progressive.
A resident of Libuko village, Thomas Tembo, hoped the proposals would be adopted.
Mr Tembo said that would ensure quality representation was enhanced as the constituency was too vast to be manned by one parliamentarian.
