Re-opening of CBU good news

IT IS not only our Zambia National Educational Coalition (ZANEC) that has welcomed the announcement by newly appointed Minister of Higher Education Brian Mushimba that the Copperbelt University (CBU) will reopen soon, but many concerned Zambians

And in agreeing with ZANEC executive director George Hamusunga I want to make my earnest appeal to government to handle issues of universities maturely in future.

It would also seem that government is paying for giving free education which unfortunately some of students at UNZA and CBU do not appreciate.

Look at private universities, all is calm because the students there realize that their parents’ money should be put to good use not in senseless riots or strikes.

However I am tempted to ask: What’s the long-term solution to these closures and strikes?

I think that the ministry of higher education needs to come out and clearly state what the students are entitled to and when and what the responsibility of the ministry is.

Right now it’s like the two sides don’t communicate in that way. The government walks around with a big stick (cops) whipping students when they complain.

If they complain for something they know and agreed to then yes, but if you promised them kandolo every three months and you don’t provide them, I think they’ve the right to complain and voice their dissatisfaction,

It is also the feeling of many Zambians that the public universities new need management and administrative restructuring if sanity has to prevail at these learning institutions.

It is shocking to hear people condemning Madam Prof Luo, former minister of higher education

For me I think she tried to bring some sanity in universities! What we should know is that decisions are made by government, not an individual!

Hence Prof Luo was just implementing what the government approved. Where on earth do fellow employees command the employer to fire a fellow employer!
