A 26-year old wife of Lusaka’s Kamanga Township has sued her husband of six years for divorce because he tells her that she stinks but the couple was ultimately reconciled.
This was heard in a case in which Sarah Phiri sued her husband Charles Mutambo, 36 of Obama for divorce.
Phiri told Chelstone Local Court senior magistrate Charity Milambo that her husband often told her off by alleging that she did not bathe her body as well as that of her child.
The two got married in 2013 and have one child together while dowry was partly paid.
“My husband leaves me with K5 for food, he also doesn’t buy lotion for me but calls me a dirty wife,
“He doesn’t support me, and also doesn’t allow me to go to church saying that there is nothing to do there because I am already married,” she said.
She also complained that her mother in-law told her that she was a dirty woman who did know how to take care of herself and her house.
“As I am speaking he chased me from the house and I stay at my parents’ place,” she said.
In defence Mutambo denied the allegations saying he did leave a K5 at home but often gave Phiri K20.
“I did not tell her that she stinks, I said she should be bathing the child because every time when I knock off from work I find her dirty together with the child,” he said.
He told court that he never chased his wife but she left on her own.
“We have been on separation for two months now, I also want divorce since she has insisted on it,” he said.
But the court ruled that divorce could not be granted because Phiri did not have grounds for divorce.
The court has then advised the parties to live and stay in harmony and to give a report on August 22.
