Risen crime levels worry church

COUNCIL of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) has condemned the continued incidences of murder in the recent past in the nation and has appealed to authorities to intensify their efforts to bring the culprits to book.

CCZ General Secretary, Emmanuel Chikoya, said there was need to urgently bring the perpetrators of the crime to book and appealed to the public to work with the police to identify suspects.

Bishop Chikoya said while the church would continue to pray and minister the message of salvation, it will take concerted efforts from everyone to end crime.

“We condemn such acts, and for the church, we will of course, keep on praying and ministering so that perpetrators can be redeemed, corrected and the affected families receive healing,” he said.

He said the church has a responsibility to reach out to the perpetrators and the family members affected by such crimes.

He said human life is sacred and should be treated as such by anyone in society.

“As communities, let us also be alert and see who is doing what in our communities and also complement the services of the police as sometimes we may know some links which may be helpful to the police,” Father Chikoya said.

He has however commended police for the quick arrest of two suspects in the recent killing of a Makeni ZNS Clinic Counselor over the weekend.

Bishop Chikoya has also advised members of the public to be alert in scrutinizing behaviors of people and work with the police whenever need arises.

He says such acts are condemned from the church perspective and there was need for exhaustive investigations and perpetrators brought to book to deter other would be offenders.
