Landlord, tenant reconciled

RABECCA BANDA writes

The Chilenje Local court has reconciled a tenant and landlord over eviction threats.

Rosaria Njovu, 43, of Chalala Township was sued by Elias Mukuka, 54, a retiree of Ng’ombe compound for being in one month rental arrears.

Njovu admitted that she and her husband were renting Mukuka’s house and had arrears of one month.

She said a week ago, Mukuka went to her and asked for the rental money.

“I explained to him that my husband was not around and asked him to give me time to find the money. I have sued him because it has been a week since he locked my children and me out of the house.  We are staying in the my neighbor’s house,

The two were appearing before senior local court magistrate Ackim Phiri sitting with senior Local court Magistrate Harriet Mbewe.

In his defence, Mukuka said Njovu was inconveniencing him by delaying to pay the rentals.

“My house is for business, that’s how I support myself and the children. If they do not pay in time, my family suffers. I did not want her to pay the arrears, all I wanted was for her to shift,

“ I charge her K1, 500 rent per month but she pays half.  This is the second time I am having problems with her, the other tenants don’t give me problems,” he said.

Mukuka said he would open the house and give her up to month end of June to shift.

The court reconciled them and ordered Njovu to pay the rental arrears.
