THREE people have perished, while two others sustained serious injuries in a fatal road traffic accident that happened on Great East Road near Nyimba in Eastern Province, police spokesperson Esther Katongo has confirmed.
Ms Katongo said the accident involved aToyota Runx registration number ACZ 9433 and Iveco truck registration number PE 2835 /PE 8397T.
She said accident occurred on June 5 about 14:00 hours at Chamilala area about 75 kilometres West of Nyimba Boma when a driver of Toyota Runx lost control due to excessive speed and went to hit into the oncoming truck.
Ms Katongo said among the dead was a driver of Toyota Runx identified as was John Chileshe of unknown address in Chipata.
āThree people among them a driver died while two others sustained serious injuries in a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on June 5, 2019 at about 1400 hours at Chamilala area about 75 Kilometres West of Nyimba Boma on the Great East Road,ā Ms Katongo said.
The Iveco truck registration number PE 2835 /PE 8397T was being driven by Ibrahim Nasanganya ,37 of Blantyre, Malawi.
In a statement, Ms Katongo said the accident happened when the driver of Toyota Runx lost control due to excessive speed and went to hit into the oncoming Iveco truck.
āThe driver John Chileshe died on the spot after sustaining fatal injuries – broken forehead and legs; female adult Milica Mutale Chileshe of the same address died after sustaining broken legs and, Fainess Mulenga also of the same address died after sustaining broken forehead and right leg ,ā she said.
Ms Katongo said the bodies of deceased were deposited in Nyimba District Hospital Mortuary.
She said the injured Mapalo Chileshe aged nine of the same address was admitted to Nyimba District Hospital while Franuel Mulenga has been admitted to St Francis Hospital.
