MWINILUNGA district has received 2,000 bags of relief maize to give to over 178 families whose crops were destroyed by a hailstorm, says acting District Commissioner Mwiya Thulani.

Mr Thulani said following a hailstorm in Kanzenzi ward in Chief Chibwika area on March 24, the people there were left with nothing as their crops were uprooted and washes away.

It was the first time the district experienced heavy ice rain and fast winds which pieced through fields for 15minutes and devastated 130 hectares of crops.

Mr Thulani told the Sun in an interview that he was grateful to government for coming to the aid of the people.

“We have received a consignment of 2,000 bags for relief maize in the district and we are very grateful. Right now people are receiving and we are starting with worst hit area of Kanzenzi where the hailstorm destroyed all maize fields,” he said
